What’s Your Niche?

A niche by definition is basically something you can offer that you are really good at. Once you figure out what that is, your design career will be a lot smoother.

When I first started designing, I wanted to only do logo and print design. I didn’t really know what that consisted of in full, I just knew what I knew. That wasn’t much. Then I started school for design and it opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me. There is so much more to design than logo and print. Some of it I’m really good at and others I wouldn’t give a second look. But that helped to narrow down what I can offer my clients without trying to do it all. It’s easy for a new designer to want to offer all design services. You have to know your limitations and focus on what you have perfected, or in the least, what you are really good at doing. There is really no point in being a jack of all trades and a master at none.
So, what’s your niche? What sets you apart from any other designer that offers the same service? What keeps your clients coming back?
I like to add that sometimes your niche can even be your personality. Sometimes, there may be a better designer. But a client just may like your attitude better, or even the fact that you haven’t been puffed up because you are just so great and talented. No one really likes to work with someone that thinks so much of themselves that they are unwilling to be teachable.
With that, find out what it is you absolutely love and is good at. Focus on that and continue to grow. Design is a fierce competition, but with the right skill set for you, you can’t go wrong.
