Using Simplicity to Communicate Effectively

Sometimes, as designers, we feel as if we have to go over the top to get our point across. A common mistake among newbies, is they want to apply everything they’ve learned into one design. I’ve learned simplicity can be more effective when trying to convey a message. One reason, when you have a lot going on in anything, it can become quite cluttered and it’s hard to interpret mess. Another reason, in my opinion, is with design you have a small window of opportunity to capture the audience’s attention; it can be through a magazine ad, or a business card, a commercial, or even a shirt with some funky design on it. You don’t want to create something that will leave anyone confused, or worse, lacking interest in anything you’ve designed.

I happened across this video at www.godtube.com. The almost 3 minute video captured and held my attention with humor, honesty and simplicity. The creators didn’t have a million bells and whistles to get their message across to me. There was only the actors, a white room and a few ipads.

While technology is increasingly improving at a rapid pace, it’s easy to want to grab your smartphone to record your babies first steps or to use your ipad to watch the latest high def video. But, we must remember, some of the best inventions started out simple…with pen and paper.

  1. You make really good points. I have found myself putting too much into a design several times. For me though, it goes back to my initial plan and follow-through. I have to keep an eye on my concept and make sure that I execute it without adding in too much along the way. I repeat, “Less is More” over and over.
